Nirmal Purja, a celebrated British-Nepali mountaineer, is reported missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Purja, who gained international acclaim for summiting all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in under seven months, was on an expedition on the 8,051-meter mountain when the incident occurred. The exact circumstances and Purja's condition remain unconfirmed.

Purja, 43, was born in Nepal's Myagdi district and comes from a family with a strong military tradition, including the Gurkhas. He served in the Gurkhas from 2003 and later joined the UK Special Forces in 2009. During his 16 years in the British military, he developed a passion for mountaineering, undertaking his first significant climb, Lobuche East, in 2012.

His adventurous spirit was evident even in his most recent expedition. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Purja mentioned that his initial plan was to climb Gasherbrum II, another peak in the Karakoram range, and that climbing Broad Peak was not originally intended. This spontaneous approach to his expeditions has been a hallmark of his career.

Nirmal Purja is one of the most recognizable figures in modern mountaineering. His record-breaking achievement with 'Project Possible' in 2019 solidified his status in the climbing community. News of his disappearance on Broad Peak has prompted concern among fellow climbers and followers worldwide.
