Renoir Paintings Recovered in France; Six Arrested

Two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir that were stolen last month from a museum in southern France have been recovered, and six people have been arrested, authorities announced Friday.

The mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, where the Renoir Museum is located, Bryan Masson, confirmed the recovery and arrests, praising the investigators. The regional prosecutor's office and police have not yet provided further details.

The stolen artworks were identified as "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well." The thieves reportedly entered the museum by cutting through a fence and climbing through a window. Initially, they stole four Renoir paintings, but abandoned two of them as they fled the scene, according to earlier reports. A national search was subsequently launched for the perpetrators.

The entire theft operation was said to have taken less than three minutes, targeting the museum's most valuable pieces. The incident has drawn attention to security measures at cultural sites in France, drawing comparisons to a previous high-profile jewel theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
