Remnants of Hurricane Isaias Could Bring Stormy Weather to UK

Britain could experience stormy conditions next week as meteorologists track the remnants of Hurricane Isaias across the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane, the first of the Atlantic season, made landfall on the US Gulf Coast with strong winds and threats of a storm surge and flooding.

After tracking up the US east coast over the weekend, the low-pressure system is expected to be carried across the Atlantic by the jet stream. Forecasters suggest that Isaias's remnants may bring tropical air, heavy rain, and strong winds to the UK midway through next week, though the exact extent of its influence remains uncertain. "We are expecting some stormy conditions by the middle of next week," ITV weather presenter Laura Tobin told Good Morning Britain.

The UK's Met Office has adopted a more cautious stance, with meteorologists monitoring how the system interacts with broader atmospheric patterns. A spokesperson for the Met Office, Nicola Maxey, stated that while Isaias is forecast to weaken after landfall in the US, heavy rain could affect parts of the southern and eastern United States for several days. "While the remnants are forecast to move north-eastwards into the Atlantic, it is too early to determine whether they will have any influence on the UK's weather," Maxey said, adding that the forecast will be updated as confidence increases.

Separately, northern England is already facing windy weather with gusts up to 60 mph expected, particularly across the Pennines, accompanied by heavy rain. The forecast for the coming days includes a mix of sunny spells, showers, and potential hail and thunder in northwestern areas, with Sunday expected to be mostly dry. Monday is predicted to bring cloudy conditions and showery rain, followed by a brighter, breezy Tuesday. A changeable weather pattern is anticipated to continue throughout mid-October.

Across the North Atlantic, a series of low-pressure systems are expected to move, bringing occasional rain and strong winds interspersed with brighter, showery conditions. Rain is most likely across western and northwestern hills, with longer dry spells anticipated in southeastern areas. Temperatures have recently returned to seasonal averages after a period that saw the UK experience several record-warm months from April to September.

In the US, residents prepared for Isaias by boarding up windows and deploying National Guard soldiers. The Category 2 hurricane was expected to bring dangerous conditions to the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi, with heavy rain and flooding possible as far north as Tennessee and North Carolina. In addition to Isaias, Hurricane Simon was also strengthening in the Pacific.

The Met Office also announced the names for the upcoming storm season, with Storm Austen, Storm Boelo, and Storm Chloe designated as the first named storms for 2026/2027 in a partnership with Ireland's Met Éireann and the Dutch service KNMI. It remains uncertain if any storms will be named in the UK next week.
