Human remains found last month in the Brecon Beacons have been identified as those of Jordan Moray, a 33-year-old gamer from Cwmbach in Aberdare who vanished in 2019, South Wales Police said Friday.
Moray was reported missing after his family discovered his flat unlocked with his PlayStation left running and his mobile phone on charge. A walker discovered the remains in a remote area in the vicinity of Llwyn On Reservoir on August 29, 2025, and a postmortem examination confirmed the identity. Police said the coroner had been updated and that the death was not being treated as suspicious; an inquest is due to be held.
Moray disappeared on August 2, 2019, prompting extensive searches by South Wales Police, family members and volunteer search teams. At the time he was last seen, his headlamp, rucksack and trainers were missing from his home and there were no bank transactions after that date, investigators said when he was first reported missing.
Family members and friends maintained a public campaign to find him and published appeals over the years. In a Facebook post announcing the identification, his brother Josh described Jordan as “my best friend” and said the family could now lay him to rest. "I've missed him ever since he went missing," Josh wrote. "He's been a big loss in my life and always will be. Now my mam and dad can lay him to rest. Love you Jordan Moray, can't wait to meet you again big bro, my heart is lost without you."
His mother, Debbie Moray, had repeatedly appealed for information and marked the sixth anniversary of his disappearance by asking the public to share his photograph and report anything that might help. "Each day is agony, and I am clinging to the hope that one day he will walk through the door again," she said in a recent appeal.
Friends and volunteers who took part in the search efforts also paid tribute. Jason Birch, who helped lead voluntary searches, described Moray as "a very fit and capable individual with a lot going for him" who "loved the outdoor life," and said he was devastated for the family after six years of uncertainty.
Moray's disappearance was featured on the Channel 5 series Vanished, presented by Dan Walker, which examined puzzling missing-person cases. Walker said the circumstances of Moray's disappearance were "strange," noting the gaming console and phone were left on when the family found the flat.
South Wales Police said in a statement that the discovery and subsequent identification had been referred to the coroner and that inquiries remain ongoing to confirm the full circumstances of Moray's death. No further details about the cause of death have been released. An inquest will be arranged to establish the facts surrounding his death and to provide a formal record for the family and the public.
The identification brings an end to a six-year period of uncertainty for Moray's relatives and for volunteers who had continued searching remote areas in south Wales. Police asked anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact South Wales Police to assist with ongoing inquiries.
