Rare Black Leopard Spotted With Two Normal Cubs in Kenya
Giza, a seven-year-old melanistic leopard, was observed with her two-year-old offspring, Zawadi and Nyota, in Laikipia.
A rare black leopard, known as Giza, has been sighted in northern Kenya with her two normally-colored cubs. Giza, a seven-year-old melanistic leopard, was seen in Laikipia earlier this month with her two-year-old offspring, Zawadi and Nyota. This sighting is particularly rare as black leopards are seldom observed in Africa, especially in its open savannas.
Wildlife photographer Andy Rouse documented Giza and her cubs, noting unusual maternal behavior. Despite Zawadi and Nyota being fully independent at two years old, Giza continues to share her kills with them, an uncommon display of affection. Rouse observed Giza making a kill, feeding herself, and then bringing a portion to Zawadi.
Giza, last seen a year ago, is known for her distinctive black fur. The cubs, despite having normal coloration, exhibit typical leopard prints that were visible in the sunlight even against Giza's dark coat.
