Veteran broadcaster Trevor Nelson, 62, has announced he has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and recently underwent surgery. Nelson shared the news on Thursday, two months after he first announced an extended break from his work commitments due to unspecified health issues.

Nelson, who typically presents weekday shows on BBC Radio 2 and Sunday programs on BBC Radio 1Xtra, had initially posted on Instagram in June that he would be taking time off. At the time, he stated that a routine check-up led to advised follow-up tests, necessitating a pause to focus on recovery. "I’m concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and getting back behind the mic and the decks," he wrote.

His announcement of the health issue had previously raised concerns among fans about the potential end of his extensive career. However, friends had expressed confidence in his return to presenting after the summer break. Nelson has been actively planning his end-of-year schedule, which includes his annual Christmas events at the Royal Albert Hall.

During a recent appearance at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards, Nelson reportedly cast some doubt on his future as a radio presenter. "Thirty years at the BBC, 10 years at KISS FM: 40 years doing radio," he told the audience. "I don't know how many more years I can do, I love every single moment of it."

Colleagues have offered support following the news. Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay sent well wishes, describing Nelson as a "stalwart broadcaster within the UK." Richie Anderson, who has been covering for Nelson, stated, "we’ve got your back, buddy." Clara Amfo and DJ Spoony have been among those covering Nelson's shows on Radio 2.

Lorna Clarke, director of music at the BBC, conveyed the organization's wishes for a speedy recovery and anticipation of his return. Nelson began his radio career as a pioneering DJ on London's pirate station Kiss FM in the 1980s before moving to Radio 1 in 1996 and later to Radio 2. He has also hosted television programs and released compilation albums.
