Queensland Ecologist Dies After Fall at Bali's Kelingking Beach
Brianna Cronin, 29, was on a notoriously steep track when she slipped and fell, prompting a rescue effort and a family appeal to bring her body home.
A Queensland ecologist holidaying in Bali has died after slipping and falling from a cliff at the popular Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida island. Brianna Cronin, 29, was reportedly on the steep and narrow track to explore the landmark when she lost her footing on loose rock and fell.
She became stranded on a ledge below the path, with another tourist spotting her in a precarious position. She subsequently suffered a second fall down the rocky cliff, sustaining multiple injuries. Rescuers faced a challenging 90-minute operation to carry Ms. Cronin's body back up the clifftop after an earlier attempt to recover it by boat was thwarted by dangerous sea swells.
Ms. Cronin's body is currently being held at a Bali hospital. Her family has launched an appeal to raise funds for her repatriation to Australia and funeral costs, noting that bringing a body home from Bali can cost up to $20,000. In a video message, her family described her as "bubbly, a little quirky, and a friend to everyone. And happiest out in nature."
"She passed away in Bali, and right now she is so far from home," her family stated. "We need your help to bring her back to Australia so we can hold her close and say goodbye. No family should have to grieve from the other side of the world. We just want our girl home."
Funds raised beyond repatriation and funeral expenses are intended to fulfill one of Ms. Cronin's lifelong dreams: building a solar-powered greenhouse. According to her family, her vision included a space for community gathering, growing produce, and a yoga studio.
Ms. Cronin, a University of Queensland graduate with degrees in Science and Arts, was remembered by her family as an "endlessly curious" individual with a deep love for nature. They recalled her fascination with the natural world, from observing plants to her comfort with wildlife. She was also an avid traveler and practiced yoga.
Kelingking Beach, known for its distinctive "T-Rex" rock formation, attracts thousands of visitors annually. However, the path leading to the beach has been criticized by tourists for its dangerous conditions. Past reviews and warnings describe the track as steep, poorly maintained, with broken railings, and posing significant risks, with one reviewer in 2019 calling it an "accident waiting to happen."
