Priest Killed by Falling Crucifix Delivered Sermon on Mortality
Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari was speaking about the transient nature of life when a large crucifix fell on him during a livestreamed Mass in Ecuador.
Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari, a Catholic priest in Guayaquil, Ecuador, died over the weekend after a large crucifix fell on him during a livestreamed Mass. The incident occurred moments after he delivered a sermon on the spontaneous nature of death and the importance of dedicating time to God and loved ones.
“One day, all of us here will also die, and sometimes the time we’ve spent on things doesn’t have as much meaning as the time we spend with God,” Sánchez Molinari told his congregation. He continued, “The quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children, and family— that time is the best spent.”
As he began another prayer, the crucifix behind him detached from the wall and fell, striking the priest. The event was captured on the livestream, and panicked congregants could be heard screaming and rushing to assist him. First responders arrived at the scene, but Sánchez Molinari was pronounced dead the same day.
Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1732. He served under the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, and his death was confirmed by Cardinal Archbishop Monsignor Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil issued a statement mourning his passing.
Leaders at the San Lorenzo Parish of Vinces, where Sánchez Molinari had previously served, also expressed their sorrow.
The cause of the crucifix falling from the wall remains unclear, and church officials have not publicly provided an explanation for the accident.
