Pregnant Woman Among 11 Killed in South African Home Invasion Shooting
Gunmen stormed a house in Durban, leaving multiple fatalities and three survivors.
A pregnant woman was among 11 people killed in a mass shooting after armed assailants entered a home in Durban, South Africa, on Tuesday night. Three other individuals survived the attack.
The incident occurred in the township of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, shortly before 11:00 p.m. local time. According to Thamsanqa Ntuli, the premier of KwaZulu-Natal province, the victims were gathered at the house when the gunmen reportedly entered and opened fire. Local media reported that the attackers forced everyone into one room before carrying out the shooting.
Police have launched a 72-hour operation to apprehend the suspects and are reportedly following a promising lead. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but the provincial premier stated that the incident has caused profound shock and grief within the community.
South Africa faces a high murder rate, with an average of 60 people killed daily. The country has a significant number of both legal and illegal firearms, and shootings are frequently attributed to gang rivalries and disputes over informal businesses. In March, the military was deployed to assist police in combating the high levels of crime, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has identified as a major threat.
One local resident described the event as shocking and unlike anything previously seen in the area. Another resident expressed disbelief, comparing the situation to a movie and noting that he had known some of the victims since childhood.
