A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck western Colombia on Monday, also impacting neighboring Ecuador and prompting evacuations. The United States Geological Survey and Colombia's geological agency both reported the magnitude and noted the earthquake was relatively deep.

The epicenter was located in San Jose Del Palmar, a community approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Colombia's capital, Bogota. As of Monday, authorities had not reported any immediate damages or injuries.

This seismic event follows two significant earthquakes that registered 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes in Venezuela in late June. Those earlier earthquakes resulted in the destruction of hundreds of buildings and caused over 5,000 fatalities.
