Pope Leo XIV announced Sunday that he will undergo surgery to remove a small nodule from his lung, a discovery made at a very early stage, according to Vatican officials. The pontiff revealed the health concern to thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square following his traditional Angelus prayer.
The 71-year-old pope said doctors recommended the removal of the "localized" nodule. The surgery is scheduled for early next week, and Pope Leo is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated.
