Pope Leo XIV will not require further therapy following surgery to remove a lung nodule, according to a statement released by the Vatican on Wednesday. Doctors confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, noting that the disease remained localized.
Histological examinations confirmed the diagnosis, and the pope's medical team announced that subsequent oncological evaluations indicated no further treatment was necessary. Pope Leo XIV underwent the surgery last week, with doctors Stefano Margaritora, the lead surgeon, and Luigi Carbone, his personal physician, releasing the statement.
The pontiff has reportedly been gradually resuming his duties after the procedure.
