Pope Francis to Recite Angelus Prayer in Public on Sunday
The pontiff resumed work activities Thursday, just days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer.
Pope Leo XIV will recite the Angelus prayer in public on Sunday, the Vatican announced Friday. The location for the public address was not specified.
A Vatican spokesperson confirmed that the pontiff resumed work activities on Thursday, several days after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung. The spokesperson added that the pope's mood has been good and that he has been able to celebrate Mass and administer Communion.
Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common subtype of non-small cell lung cancer. The surgery, performed at Rome's Agostino Gemelli University Hospital, lasted approximately 90 minutes and was described by doctors as successful with no complications. His hospital stay was initially expected to last about a week.
Lung adenocarcinoma originates in the epithelial cells that line the surface of the lungs and produce mucus. The pontiff received letters and drawings from children, which were delivered by his secretary, according to the spokesperson.
