Police Officer Killed in Sydney Patrol Car Crash
A female constable died at the scene after the vehicle struck a tree and split in half in Redfern.
A police officer has died after a patrol car crashed into a tree and was torn in half in Sydney's inner west early Friday morning. The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. in Redfern as the fully marked vehicle was traveling with lights and sirens activated along Gibbons Street.
The female constable, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet formally identified her.
The driver of the patrol car, also a constable, sustained injuries and was treated by paramedics. He was transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police have secured the area and established a crime scene, launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. A critical incident has been declared.
As a result of the incident, Gibbons Street is largely closed. Regent Street is shut in both directions north of Lawson Street, and Wyndham Street has also been closed, leading to diversions for several bus routes. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
