Phuket Flooded After Overnight Deluge

Flash floods inundated several areas of Thailand's southern island province of Phuket on Monday following heavy rainfall overnight, officials reported. The island's capital, Phuket City, and all three of its districts were affected.

Water levels began to recede by late morning, though some low-lying areas remained submerged. Provincial deputy governor Romdon Hayiawae advised caution for small vehicles in these areas. Mudslides also occurred in parts of the province, and authorities were working to clear debris from canals and waterways.

Social media footage depicted floodwaters flowing through residential areas and rendering roads impassable. Some vehicles were partially covered in mud and rocks.

Approximately 100 households were impacted, but no casualties have been reported, according to Hayiawae. The Thai Meteorological Department has forecast heavy and continuous rain in the southern region through Wednesday, raising concerns about further flash floods and landslides.

Phuket's flooding occurs as much of Thailand has been dealing with severe weather since mid-September. At least 83 people have died nationwide as of Monday, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Earlier, the Thai capital, Bangkok, experienced significant flooding in late September after sustained torrential rain, which led to evacuations and widespread disruptions.
