A 70-year-old man deliberately drove his car into an elderly neighbour at a gated residential park on the Hoo Peninsula in Kent in 2023, CCTV footage published by media outlets shows.
The footage shows the moment Anthony Fowles struck the man and then drove off after the victim attempted to grab the keys from the ignition. The injured neighbour was left shaken by the incident, which took place within the confines of a residential caravan park.
Fowles was subsequently charged with assault. He received a 12-month community order, a six-month curfew and was fined £199, according to court records reported alongside the footage. The sentencing follows an investigation by local authorities into the 2023 collision.
Court papers and media reports do not indicate that the injured man suffered life-threatening injuries, but the footage circulated following the hearing prompted renewed attention to the case. The incident occurred within a small, gated residential community on the Hoo Peninsula, an area of North Kent that is home to a number of static and touring caravan parks.
Prosecutors said the recorded images showed the defendant driving into the victim after a confrontation. The video appears to capture the moments immediately before and after contact between the vehicle and the pedestrian, including the victim’s attempt to stop the car by reaching for the ignition keys.
Local policing units reviewed the footage during their investigation and provided evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which brought the assault charge. The sentencing imposed a community order designed to restrict Fowles’s movements with a nightly curfew and to subject him to supervision and other community penalties rather than immediate custody.
The case adds to a series of recent incidents in which video evidence has played a central role in prosecution and public reporting. Courts in England and Wales routinely consider CCTV recordings and other digital evidence when determining charges and sentencing.
No public statements from Fowles or his legal representatives were reported in the media coverage of the case. Local authorities said they would not comment beyond confirming that an investigation had taken place and that appropriate legal steps were taken following the assault charge.
