Pensioner Dies After Sunbed Dispute in Greece

An 82-year-old man has died in Greece after a dispute over sunbeds escalated into a physical altercation. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Vouliagmeni, a seaside town near Athens.

The deceased, along with his wife, was reportedly using six sun loungers when a 76-year-old man and his 21-year-old female companion approached, having purchased tickets for loungers. According to reports, the 82-year-old stated that his group occupied the spot and that all six loungers were in use. An argument ensued, which led to a scuffle.

During the fight, the 82-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic with screaming heard from across the beach. Beach workers intervened, and a doctor and lifeguards administered CPR and used a defibrillator at the beach clinic. Despite these efforts, the man was transported to Asklepieion Hospital in Voula, where he died approximately an hour later.

The 76-year-old man involved in the altercation was arrested by Greek authorities on charges of causing fatal bodily harm and is expected to appear in court. His 21-year-old companion, who is reportedly disabled, was also arrested for complicity in the brawl, making threats, and verbal abuse. Witnesses told local media that she sustained injuries to her face, with one report describing her face as bloodied and swollen.

An acquaintance of the 76-year-old told the Greek newspaper ProtoThema that his friend had sustained injuries, as did the 21-year-old woman accompanying him. He recounted that the 82-year-old had stated, "Do you know who I am? I'm from the navy."

Disputes over sunbeds are not uncommon in tourist destinations. In recent years, such incidents have escalated across Europe, with tourists vying for prime spots. Reports have surfaced of individuals sleeping on loungers overnight to reserve them, and instances of significant queues forming hours before beach access. One case from Tenerife in July saw over 100 tourists filmed waiting in line for more than an hour to secure poolside sunbeds, with a rush occurring once barriers were removed.

In a separate incident in May, a German holidaymaker reportedly received a payout after claiming his children were left without suitable loungers on a Greek island.
