One Rescued from Nairobi Building Collapse, Others Missing
A rescue operation is underway after a building under construction in Kenya's capital collapsed, trapping an unknown number of people.
One person was rescued from the rubble of a building that collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya, more than 24 hours after its floors pancaked, police confirmed Saturday.
The structure was under construction on a busy commercial street in the Eastleigh area, a location frequently crowded with thousands of traders and residents. Authorities stated that the building had more than 10 stories under construction.
Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen announced Friday that seven individuals had been reported missing, and rescue teams had established contact with some of those trapped within the debris. The rescued man was taken to a hospital on Saturday.
According to government spokesman Charles Owino, the registered owner of the building is deceased, and his family and another party are currently managing the property.
Vincent Ochieng, a disaster officer with the Kenya Red Cross, reported that the organization had logged 31 missing persons but was still in the process of verifying these reports. He noted that some workers might have left the construction site before the building's collapse.
Rescuers utilized sniffer dogs and thermal sensors in their efforts to locate individuals trapped within the rubble.
Businesses situated in buildings adjacent to the collapsed structure remained closed as owners assessed their losses. Some business owners attributed the incident to the local government's failure to enforce building regulations.
