One Dead, Five Missing After Athens Building Explosion

An explosion in Athens' historic Plaka district has resulted in one confirmed death and left five people missing, according to local media and initial reports. The blast, which occurred near tourist landmarks like the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, completely destroyed a three-story building and damaged neighboring structures.

The incident is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, with emergency services currently engaged in a search and rescue operation amidst the rubble. Excavators and thermal imaging cameras are being utilized in the effort to locate survivors. Debris from the collapsed building was scattered across the street.

Reports indicate the building housed a holiday rental. Among the missing are believed to be four American tourists, one British national, and a Greek citizen, although authorities have not yet confirmed these details. The tourists were identified as missing when they failed to arrive for their scheduled flight at Athens airport.

The body of a woman was discovered on Saturday morning, and the search for the remaining missing individuals continues. The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for further information.
