Off-Duty Lifeguard Rescues Swimmer During Storm Boelo
A dramatic rescue unfolded on Langland Bay as an off-duty lifeguard braved rough seas and strong winds to save a struggling swimmer.
An off-duty RNLI lifeguard, Ryder Taylor, 25, rescued a swimmer in distress off Langland Bay, near Swansea, amid the challenging conditions brought by Storm Boelo. Taylor was walking on the beach with his girlfriend, Ava, also an RNLI lifeguard, when they spotted the person in difficulty.
Without hesitation, Taylor retrieved a rescue board from the RNLI hut and entered the rough sea, dressed only in his swim trunks. Another surfer, Chris French, who was already in the water, managed to pull the struggling swimmer onto his board. Taylor then reached them and assisted in bringing both back to shore.
Tom John, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for Swansea, praised Taylor and Ava for their quick actions, emphasizing their commitment even while off duty. He noted that such incidents have become more frequent, with off-duty lifeguards and surfers often stepping in to assist those in peril along the coast.
John also highlighted that there are currently no RNLI lifeguarded beaches along the Swansea coastline and urged the public to check tide times and weather conditions before visiting. The UK experienced severe weather over the weekend, with Storm Boelo following Storm Austen, bringing gusts of 60 to 70 mph to coastal areas.
Chris Cousens, Regional Water Safety Lead, advised beachgoers to check tide times, seek local knowledge if unsure about tidal information, and heed safety signs. He stressed the importance of carrying a fully charged mobile phone for emergencies, calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard if in difficulty. He also reminded individuals to practice the 'Float to Live' technique if caught in the water: tilting the head back with ears submerged, relaxing, and spreading arms and legs to float on the back until able to signal for help.
The Met Office indicated that the jet stream is unusually active, contributing to the succession of storms battering the UK. Storm Boelo's amber warning concluded on Sunday evening. The severe weather has been linked to several fatalities across the UK, including individuals hit by fallen trees and car accidents during the storms, as well as a woman swept out to sea. Power outages affected hundreds of thousands of homes across the country following the storms.
