King Harald of Norway's health deteriorated over the weekend, according to a statement from the royal palace. The 89-year-old monarch, who has been on sick leave for several weeks, was admitted to the National Hospital a week ago.
He is currently receiving antibiotics for a bacterial blood infection and has responded to the treatment, the palace said late Sunday. His condition is stable.
Crown Prince Haakon has been serving as regent during his father's absence. The King suffers from hemolytic anemia and was previously being treated with cortisone, which led to fluid accumulation in the body requiring hospitalization last week.
Harald has been the monarch of Norway since 1991 and has experienced several hospital visits in recent years.
