Lando Norris has secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, but the McLaren driver anticipates a strong challenge from other teams during the race. Despite qualifying on top, Norris acknowledged that the race dynamics could favor competitors with different car strengths.
"They are very fast in the high-speed but I don't think that will give them as much of an opportunity to use that pace as in qualifying," Norris stated, noting that tire temperatures can limit outright speed on race pace. "But pole is the best place to start, especially on a circuit where it's difficult to overtake."
Norris's strategy will focus on maintaining his lead through the initial laps. He expressed confidence that if he can hold off rivals through the first lap, his chances of victory will increase. However, he also conceded that Mercedes' overall car performance could make them formidable opponents in the race.
Meanwhile, George Russell is looking to capitalize on the weekend to reignite his title challenge. He needs a strong result to gain ground on Kimi Antonelli, who has maintained a significant points lead for most of the season. While Russell secured victory in the sprint race with Antonelli finishing fourth, closing the gap to 56 points, the Italian still holds a commanding advantage.
Russell has shown improved form throughout the weekend, outperforming Antonelli in all three competitive sessions. He attributed this resurgence to a mental reset during the summer break, which allowed him to gain perspective on a challenging first half of the season. "The break just allowed me to put those learnings into the back of my mind, come here this weekend, not fixating on what I want to try and achieve with the car and the tyres, but knowing in the back of my head what I need to achieve and just drive more freely," Russell explained.
He described implementing a driving style adjustment similar to changing one's golf swing, requiring a brief setback for long-term improvement. "After the break, I just feel way more relaxed. I don't feel like I've got anything to lose," he added. "The pressure's off. I'm just going to go out, enjoy it, and I don't even really feel in a fight. It's not mine to lose, it's mine to gain. So that's the mentality I've got, and I feel it's going to help me. I'm just enjoying driving."
Russell is focused on staying ahead of Antonelli, viewing the remainder of the season as an opportunity for gains rather than a defense of a lead. This shift in mentality, he believes, will be crucial as the season progresses amidst global uncertainties.
