Newly Opened £117 Million Bridge Damaged by Storm Boelo, Faces Months of Closure
The Renfrew Bridge in Scotland, which only opened last year, sustained electrical damage from flooding during Storm Boelo, necessitating an extended closure.
A £117 million bridge, the Renfrew Bridge, which opened to traffic less than two years ago, has been forced to close for an estimated number of months due to damage sustained during Storm Boelo. The storm, which brought significant flooding to the area, impacted the bridge's electrical systems, rendering it inoperable.
The bridge, which spans the River Clyde and features a design that splits in half to swing open for maritime traffic, relies on electronic systems to control its hydraulics. Renfrewshire Council confirmed that the electrical infrastructure on the Renfrew side of the bridge suffered substantial damage from the high water levels.
Gerard Hannah, the council's head of climate, public protection and roads, stated that urgent work is underway to diagnose and repair the issues. The closure means that commuters and others who utilize the route will need to find alternative journeys. The council is legally obligated to maintain the accessibility of the Clyde for river traffic, which means the bridge cannot be reopened until repairs are completed.
The Renfrew Bridge, which connects Renfrew to Yoker, is a vital link for many, including those traveling to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the Golden Jubilee Hospital. Between June 2026 and April of this year, the bridge facilitated over 3.5 million crossings.
The closure comes as parts of Scotland continue to recover from Storm Boelo. Hundreds of homes and businesses experienced power outages, with engineers working to restore electricity supplies. As of Wednesday, approximately 620 properties remained without power, though utility companies anticipated most would have their electricity back by Thursday evening.
Forecasters have indicated that a third named storm, Chloe, is not expected to arrive soon, and calmer weather conditions are anticipated for the immediate future, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 16C (61F) in some areas. However, a band of rain is forecast to move in from the Atlantic by Friday, affecting the north and west of the country.
