Newborn Seal Pups Cuddle With Mothers on Norfolk Beach

Dozens of newborn seal pups have been observed snuggling with their mothers on Horsey beach in Norfolk, signaling the start of the pupping season. This annual event draws visitors to the five-mile stretch of coast, where more than 3,700 baby seals were born last year.

The seal population between Waxham and Winterton is a well-known attraction during the winter months as young seals are weaned before returning to the sea. Large gatherings of grey seals are frequently seen along the Norfolk coast, attracting animal enthusiasts.

Animal welfare organizations, including the RSPCA, are reminding the public to observe the seals from a significant distance. They emphasize that any disturbance can cause stress, energy loss, sleep deprivation, pain, and injury to the animals. Seal wardens and warning signs have been placed in areas favored by the grey seal colony to help manage visitor behavior.

The RSPCA advises maintaining a distance of at least 100 meters, equivalent to the length of a football pitch, from mother seals and their pups. If startled, a mother seal may flee into the sea and abandon her pup, potentially preventing it from being fed.

The RSPCA has issued guidance to anyone wanting to see the seals, advising them to 'stay back and observe from a distance'

It is illegal under UK wildlife laws to pet, feed, or otherwise interact with seals. Both common seals and grey seals found on the Norfolk coast are protected by these laws.
