Netherlands Withdraws from Eurovision Over Israel Participation Concerns

The Netherlands will not participate in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest due to "sensitivities" related to Israel's involvement, public broadcaster NPO announced. The decision marks a withdrawal from the international music competition following a period of heightened geopolitical tension.

Jet de Ranitz, executive chairman of NPO, stated that "it is currently too early to participate" and that the broadcaster has decided to "take a step back for the time being." He acknowledged the decision would disappoint Dutch fans but confirmed that the contest would still be broadcast on public television channels.

This withdrawal follows a series of other countries and participants who have expressed concerns or pulled out of the contest over Israel's inclusion. The Czech public broadcaster also recently announced its withdrawal, citing budget cuts, while Ireland has confirmed it will not participate. The head of Spain's public broadcaster has also voiced support for a boycott.

The Eurovision Song Contest, founded in 1956 to foster unity in post-war Europe, has increasingly found itself navigating political complexities. In 2022, Russia was expelled from the competition following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Tensions have escalated significantly since the Hamas militant attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has led to a substantial number of casualties.

The 2024 Eurovision contest, held in Malmo, Sweden, experienced pro-Palestinian protests and increased security measures. Similar concerns and demonstrations were noted during the 2025 contest in Basel, Switzerland, and the 2026 contest in Vienna.

Calls for Israel's exclusion from the contest have grown, given the ongoing conflict. Israel has been a participant in Eurovision since 1973, making it one of the few non-European nations to compete regularly.
