Netherlands Withdraws from Eurovision Over Israel Participation

The Netherlands will not participate in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest due to what its national broadcaster has described as "sensitivities" surrounding Israel's involvement.

Jet de Ranitz, executive chairman of broadcaster NPO, stated that the decision was made because "it is currently too early to participate." He added, "Due to the sensitivities surrounding the themes currently at play, we have decided to take a step back for the time being." The broadcaster acknowledged that this decision would likely disappoint Dutch fans but confirmed that the contest would still be broadcast on public channels.

The Eurovision Song Contest has recently faced a series of boycotts and calls for the exclusion of Israel. These protests are linked to Israel's military operations in Gaza, which began after Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. The conflict has led to significant loss of life and widespread international concern.

While the Netherlands' withdrawal is directly attributed to these sensitivities, the Czech public broadcaster also announced its withdrawal earlier this month, citing budget cuts as the reason. Ireland has also confirmed it will not participate, and the head of the Spanish public broadcaster has expressed support for a boycott.

Eurovision, founded in 1956 with the aim of fostering unity in post-World War II Europe, has increasingly found itself navigating the intersection of popular culture and political tensions. Russia was expelled from the contest in 2022 following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The 2024 contest in Malmo, Sweden, and subsequent events in Basel, Switzerland, and Vienna were marked by pro-Palestinian protests and heightened security measures. Israel, a non-European country that has competed since 1973, has been the subject of calls for exclusion from several performers and participating nations.

The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria.
