Nepal Government Building Collapses Into River Amid Floods
Heavy rainfall and landslides triggered by monsoon rains caused a municipality building in Baglung to fall into the Daram River.
A government building in western Nepal collapsed into the Daram River on Sunday, September 27, after heavy flooding destabilized the ground beneath it. The municipality building in Baglung was left teetering on an unstable ledge before succumbing to the force of the rising waters.
Local officials managed to evacuate important documents and computers from the building prior to its collapse, according to Tej Thapa, a local ward chair who spoke to the BBC. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred amid widespread flooding and landslides across Nepal. The country's national disaster agency reported that at least 27 people have died in recent days due to these natural disasters. This latest event follows a devastating flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border just weeks earlier, which resulted in approximately 1,400 fatalities and left thousands more missing.
