A collision on the M9 Northbound motorway in County Kildare early Sunday morning resulted in multiple fatalities and four injuries. The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time at Junction 3.

According to Gardaí, the Irish police force, one vehicle was traveling on the wrong side of the carriageway when it collided head-on with a second car. Authorities confirmed there were a number of fatalities.

The driver and front passenger of the second vehicle, both women in their 30s, were transported to Tallaght University Hospital and remain in critical condition. A female passenger in her 20s was taken to St. Luke's General Hospital and is in serious condition. A child, the third passenger in that vehicle, was taken to Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin and is also in serious condition.

The M9 motorway remains closed in both directions between Junctions 3 and 4, with local diversions in place. The Office of the Police Ombudsman (Fiosrú) has been notified of the incident and dispatched an on-call team of investigators to the scene. Fiosrú investigations are initiated in incidents involving contact with gardaí where a member of the public has died or been seriously injured, and a referral does not imply wrongdoing by police.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision and are requesting road users who traveled on the M9 Northbound or Southbound between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Sunday to provide any dashcam footage they may have.
