A mudslide in eastern China on Saturday killed one person and left 11 others missing, authorities reported. The incident occurred in a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, following days of heavy rainfall associated with tropical cyclone Saudel.
Rescuers were dispatched to the scene in the early hours of the morning. They managed to rescue two individuals alive, who were reported to be in good condition. The mudslide also damaged approximately a dozen houses, prompting officials to relocate residents from the affected area to prevent further danger.
Tropical cyclone Saudel made landfall multiple times in China starting Aug. 28. It first hit Zhejiang Province and later made a third landfall as a tropical storm in Fujian Province on Thursday. Both Zhejiang and Fujian neighbor Jiangxi province.
In Fujian, days of heavy rain attributed to the storm caused multiple residents to be unaccounted for, according to Chinese state media. In Huating Town, located in Putian city, more than 100 houses collapsed. A dike in the area also breached Thursday afternoon, leading to flooding in villages and trapping residents.
As of Friday night, around 600,000 residents in Fujian had been evacuated from areas deemed at risk, both offshore and onshore. State broadcaster CCTV showed images of streets inundated with water, with rescuers using inflatable boats for their operations.
