Mother Charged in Stabbing Death of 5-Year-Old Son, Wounding of Two Others
Authorities allege a mother fatally stabbed her 5-year-old son and wounded two other children in the Blue Mountains of Australia.
A 45-year-old woman is expected to be charged with homicide after her 5-year-old son died and two other children were wounded in a stabbing incident in Australia's Blue Mountains.
The woman, believed to be the mother of the three children, was found with self-inflicted stab wounds and is in critical condition at Westmead Hospital. The two surviving children, both under five, are also in critical condition at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The father of the children has been notified.
Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna described the scene as "horrific" and part of "the most tragic 48 hours" he has witnessed in his career. Police were called to the location on Waratah Road, Valley Heights, on Sunday morning after passing cyclists discovered the scene and provided first aid.
"We believe her injuries are self inflicted," McKenna stated, adding that the investigation was in its early stages and the mother would be charged with homicide if she recovers.
The violence is alleged to have unfolded where the vehicle was parked, near the entrance to a vacant block by a fire trail. Police do not yet have a rationale for why that specific location was chosen.
McKenna noted that none of the individuals involved were known to police for domestic violence incidents or had apprehended violence orders against them. "We can’t prevent what we don’t know about, but this is an example it can happen anywhere, anytime," he said, urging the community to report any concerns about individuals.
The incident was one of four alleged family violence-related deaths in New South Wales over that weekend. These included a man charged with domestic murder for allegedly killing his 23-year-old partner with an edged weapon near Wagga, a grandson charged with domestic murder for allegedly killing his 90-year-old grandmother at Bondi Beach, and a man charged with domestic murder for allegedly killing his 70-year-old mother near Tenterfield.
Domestic violence remains the "number one priority" for NSW Police, McKenna emphasized, urging anyone feeling trapped in a relationship to seek help from police or domestic violence support services. He also stated that officers involved in responding to these scenes would receive welfare support, acknowledging the profound emotional toll such events can have.
