A 32-year-old Australian woman has been charged with domestic violence murder and is being investigated for possible cannibalism in connection with the death of her 4-year-old son. The child was discovered deceased in the pair's home in Wyong, with authorities reporting significant injuries to his arm.

Investigators were led to the residence by the mother, who has not been publicly identified, after she reportedly arrived at a police station. The child may have been deceased for several days prior to being discovered.

Following the grim discovery, authorities obtained an urgent court order to conduct forensic examinations on the mother, including taking samples from her mouth, forensic material, and a buccal swab. Samples were also collected from her fingernails.

Police sources confirmed that cannibalism is being investigated as a possibility in the boy's death, a line of inquiry that emerged after discussions with the mother. Superintendent Chad Gillies described the scene as "extremely confronting" and stated that officers involved were offered support services.

The mother and son had recently moved into the rental home earlier this year, following an alleged domestic violence incident involving the woman and a former partner, according to a neighbor. The mother was known to police.

The NSW Department of Communities and Justice announced an independent review into the child's death. The department confirmed it had received and responded to reports concerning the family, with the most recent occurring 18 months prior to the incident.

A vigil was held in Wyong, where dozens gathered to leave flowers for the boy. The accused mother is being held without bail.
