A 32-year-old mother, who has been charged with murder after allegedly killing and consuming parts of her four-year-old son, likely experienced a psychotic break, according to a source close to the family. The mother, whose identity is being withheld to protect the child victim's identity in accordance with NSW laws, surrendered to police on July 4.

Police responded to a community housing complex on Blake Street, where they discovered the boy with critical injuries. The mother was subsequently arrested and charged. Neighbors last saw the boy, described as a cheerful and Spider-Man-obsessed child, with his mother two days prior to the police response. Following their last sighting, the unit reportedly fell silent.

A source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail that neighbors were shocked when officers arrived at the complex. When questioned about the boy's well-being, police informed residents, "He's not okay. He's gone."

The source indicated that while the mother was described as "a little different" and struggled with binge-drinking, she was employed, attended the gym, and actively worked to provide a comfortable life for her son. They stated there were no signs of physical abuse and that the boy never appeared to be afraid of his mother, often seeking comfort from her when upset.

"Everything she did showed that she was a mum who loved her kid, and he responded as a kid who didn't show any fear," the source said. "He loved and adored his mum, he was always giving her kisses and cuddles, and he did not act like a kid who was abused."

The source believes the mother was not aware of her actions at the time of the alleged incident, suggesting a decline began when she took a leave of absence from work and did not return. Neighbors observed her struggling, and her binge-drinking was noted as a significant issue, with the source stating she became a "different person" when she drank.

Authorities are pursuing forensic testing, including samples of saliva, blood, nail clippings, and debris from under the suspect's fingernails. In Wyong Local Court, her legal representative requested a two-week adjournment to review the case, which was granted. The matter is scheduled to be heard again on August 14.

Previous reports indicate the mother has a history of substance abuse dating back to her teenage years, including cannabis, alcohol, pills, and GHB. A relative confirmed she had previously attended rehab, with social services aware of her situation. Concerns had been raised by social services regarding potential child neglect due to the mother's suspected drug-induced psychosis.
