A Moroccan football fan died in Algeciras, Spain, after the flag she was wearing around her neck while celebrating her country's World Cup victory became entangled in a motorbike's rear wheel.

The 39-year-old was a passenger on the back of a motorbike with her husband around 11 p.m. on July 4, 2026, when the flag was pulled into the wheel. The incident dragged her from the vehicle, causing a severe neck injury.

Emergency services arriving at the scene found the woman in cardiac arrest and began resuscitation efforts. Paramedics later took over, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Europa Punta Hospital in Cádiz.

The accident occurred just hours after Morocco secured its place in the World Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Canada. Police confirmed that the woman's husband, who was driving the motorbike, was not under the influence of alcohol.

Algeciras Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce expressed his condolences and stated that city officials were providing support to the family of the deceased. The city has a significant Moroccan community, with approximately 10,000 of its 128,000 residents originating from North Africa.

This incident bears a resemblance to a fatal accident in Argentina in December 2022, where a 22-year-old fan, Oscar Maciel, died after a flag draped around his shoulders became caught in his motorbike's wheel while celebrating Argentina's World Cup final win. Witnesses reported seeing him fall and realizing the flag was around his neck, with initial investigations suggesting asphyxiation as the cause of death.
