Monaco Royal Family Mourns Death of Prince Albert's Cousin
Antoine de Massy, 29, found dead in public gardens; Ukrainian national arrested in connection with the case.
The royal family of Monaco is in mourning following the mysterious death of Antoine de Massy, a 29-year-old cousin of Prince Albert II. His body was discovered on Sunday in a public garden.
De Massy was reportedly last seen staggering from a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was reported missing after failing to attend a family lunch, according to Monaco Matin, and his body was found shortly thereafter. Police arrested a Ukrainian national on Monday who was seen with de Massy on CCTV footage. The prosecutor's office stated that the arrested man's role is unclear and that all possibilities, including an accident, are being considered as the investigation into the cause of death continues.
De Massy was the grandson of Princess Antoinette, Prince Albert's aunt, making him a first cousin once removed to the reigning prince. The Prince's Palace issued a statement on Monday expressing sadness at the death and offering condolences to de Massy's family and loved ones. The statement also noted his connection to tennis in the principality.
De Massy was a keen tennis player who moved to Florida in his youth to train at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. More recently, he co-founded a tech company called Instant Tech, aimed at connecting local businesses with clients for reservations and payments. Despite his royal lineage, he reportedly preferred to avoid the Monte Carlo social scene.
