Milk Recalled in Australia Due to E. coli Contamination Risk

An urgent recall has been issued for Tweedvale Dairies reduced-fat milk sold in Australia due to potential contamination with E. coli bacteria. The recall affects one-litre and two-litre bottles with a use-by date of October 21, 2026. These products were sold through independent retailers, including IGA stores.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has advised consumers not to consume the recalled milk and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. FSANZ stated that "Food products contaminated with microbial (E. coli) may cause illness if consumed."

E. coli is a bacterium commonly found in the intestines of people and animals. While most strains are harmless, certain strains can cause illness. Harmful strains can spread through contaminated food or water and lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. In severe cases, bloody diarrhea can occur. E. coli can also cause urinary tract infections if it enters the urinary system.

SA Health has warned that some E. coli infections can become serious, particularly for young children and the elderly, and that symptoms may take several days to appear. FSANZ noted that pathogenic E. coli can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or from contact with animal feces or unsanitary equipment during production and handling.

Consumers who have ingested the recalled milk and are concerned about their health are advised to seek medical attention.
