A young male elephant seal, weighing approximately 1,000kg, has become a recurring source of disruption after returning to shore in Tasmania for its annual rest and moulting period. The seal, known as Neil, has been observed blocking roads, damaging parked cars, and flattening traffic bollards.
Video footage shows Neil navigating Australian roads, prompting intervention from staff at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Officials have been seen using poles and cardboard to guide the animal, while also issuing public safety advice. Residents have been warned to maintain a distance of at least 20 meters from Neil and to move away slowly if the seal approaches.
One incident captured on video shows the seal near a van, with warnings that it might damage the vehicle. The van owner was able to drive away after the seal was momentarily distracted. Another clip depicts Neil interacting with traffic bollards, leaving them flattened on the roadway.
Some locals have expressed frustration with the intervention efforts, with one individual heard saying, "Neil will go to the beach when Neil wants to go to the f***ing beach." Officials maintain that their methods prioritize the animal's well-being and public safety.
Neil was born in Salem Bay on the Tasman Peninsula in 2020 and has gained a significant online following, particularly on TikTok. His behavior on land is consistent with the natural habits of elephant seals, which come ashore to rest and shed their fur and skin. This moulting process typically lasts between three to six weeks. Tasmania's department of natural resources and environment noted that male southern elephant seals, in the absence of a colony in Tasmania, may be drawn to populated areas seeking interaction.
