German police are searching for a suspect after a driver rammed a van into a crowd of people celebrating near Berlin's Pride event on Saturday evening, resulting in at least one death and numerous injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after the LGBTQ+ community celebration, known as Christopher Street Day, had commenced in the Tiergarten Park, close to the Brandenburg Gate. Berlin police confirmed that emergency services responded to the scene, where "numerous" people were injured, with several sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Authorities called off the Pride event around 10:15 p.m. local time, interrupting a performance on stage. Attendees were advised to leave the area and avoid the route through Tiergarten Park. Prior to the attack, hundreds of thousands had gathered for one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, which had featured hours of peaceful marching, music, and approximately 80 floats.
Police have launched an intensive search for the suspect or suspects. "We are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects," a police spokesperson stated in a video released by the Berlin police on X.
Emergency personnel, including firefighters and ambulances, were present to assist the victims. Some individuals were reportedly undergoing resuscitation at the scene. The driver is described as being from the "Islamist scene," according to reports.
