Manhunt Underway After 4 Killed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines Shooting
Authorities are searching for suspects in a shooting that left four dead and four injured, as the nation grapples with rising gang violence.
A manhunt is underway in St. Vincent and the Grenadines following a shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to four others, authorities reported Saturday.
The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force responded to reports of gunfire in Green Hill, a district near the capital city of Kingstown, late Friday. Acting Police Commissioner Trevor Bailey stated that officers discovered two bodies on the public road, a third body in a parked vehicle, and a fourth body on an adjacent piece of land.
All four victims appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds. Two of the injured individuals remain hospitalized. As of Saturday, no arrests had been made, and police were working to determine the motive behind the killings. Authorities are also investigating a separate killing that occurred on Saturday to determine if it is connected to the earlier incident.
St. Clair Leacock, the minister of national security, described the shootings as "unfortunate" and "unnecessary." He acknowledged that while St. Vincent and the Grenadines is generally a peaceful country, gang violence has become a persistent issue in many communities.
According to police figures, 37 murders have been recorded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines this year. The nation, which has a population of approximately 110,000 people, is an archipelago composed of 32 islands and cays in the eastern Caribbean. It has historically relied heavily on tourism, known for its volcanic landscapes, coral reefs, and beaches, attracting yachters and offering secluded private islands.
"These homicides create a serious nightmare for us," Leacock commented on the impact of the violence on the nation's image and economy.
