A man has died after being shot in Melbourne's central business district in the early hours of Sunday, Victoria Police said.
Officers were called to the corner of Franklin and Elizabeth streets at about 3:50 a.m. following reports of a gunshot, police said. A short time later a man presented to a hospital on Grattan Street in Parkville with what appeared to be a gunshot wound and died soon after arrival.
"A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing," Victoria Police said in a statement. "Detectives from the Homicide Squad and Armed Crime Squad will attend the scene this morning."
Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Detectives are carrying out inquiries at the scene and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident follows two shootings in the city last week, according to local reports, adding to concerns about recent firearm-related incidents in Melbourne. Authorities did not provide information on a motive or identify the victim while initial inquiries continue.
Investigators typically seek further forensic examinations, witness statements and any available surveillance footage in the hours and days after such incidents. Police asked anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation.
No arrests were reported at the time of the police statement. The Homicide Squad and Armed Crime Squad were expected to remain involved as detectives piece together events leading up to the shooting and the victim's movements prior to presenting at the hospital.
Victoria Police said updates would be provided as the investigation progresses and asked members of the public to avoid the area while forensic work was carried out.
Anyone with information is again asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to report information online to assist detectives with their inquiries.
