A man was shot by police and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after officers fired at the scene of a house fire in Brisbane on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to a Cabanda Street address in Wynnum West shortly before 9:30 a.m. following reports that an occupant was inside a burning home. It is understood the man was shot in the stomach during a confrontation with police and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Firefighters later extinguished the blaze at the property. Queensland emergency services remained at the scene in the hours after the incident as police carried out inquiries.

Authorities have not released further information about the circumstances that led to officers firing, the number of shots discharged, or the man’s identity. Police statements and official updates were awaited as of the latest reports.

The incident prompted a multi-agency response to the Wynnum West neighbourhood on Tuesday, drawing fire crews and ambulance paramedics in addition to law enforcement. The Princess Alexandra Hospital is a major trauma centre serving Brisbane and surrounding areas.

An investigation into the shooting and the cause of the house fire is underway. No further details had been confirmed publicly at the time of publication.
