Man Killed in Tiger Attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park Identified

The man who died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday afternoon has been identified as William Chapman. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. BST when Chapman entered the enclosure housing an Amur tiger named Altai. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Witnesses reported seeing Chapman wearing headphones and pacing near the enclosure before he entered it. South Yorkshire Police confirmed Chapman was visiting the park alone and his family is being supported by specialist officers. The park was evacuated following the attack and remains closed as investigations are underway.

The City of Doncaster Council has also initiated a health and safety investigation into the death. Yorkshire Wildlife Park expressed its condolences to Chapman's family. The tiger, Altai, remains in its enclosure and will not be euthanized.

Dr. Campbell Murn, a lecturer at the University of Reading and former member of the government's zoo expert committee, commented that determined individuals can bypass zoo security measures. He likened such incidents to a determined thief breaking into a house, noting that despite security systems, such events can occur.
