Man Killed by Siberian Tiger After Entering Enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

A man died after being mauled by a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday, according to South Yorkshire Police and park officials. The incident occurred around 1:35 p.m. when the man, believed to be in his 20s, entered the tiger enclosure.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the man was attacked by the 30-stone tiger, named Altai. Videos circulating online appeared to show the tiger dragging the man, who was heard crying out. Visitors reportedly shouted in an attempt to distract the animal while zoo keepers responded with acoustic gas-powered guns, firing blasts in an effort to drive the tiger away.

One witness told The Mail on Sunday that the man seemed to be 'psyched himself up' with a 'dance' in the spectator area before scaling a fence to enter the enclosure. The man was reportedly seen kneeling with his arms outstretched and pointing at the tiger before the attack.

Emergency services, including two road ambulances and an air ambulance with paramedics equipped with blood transfusion kits, arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries. Police confirmed the man's family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

The tiger, Altai, remained uninjured in its enclosure, and police stated there was no wider risk to the public. The park, located near Doncaster, initiated its emergency response procedures and is cooperating with authorities to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident.

Altai arrived at the park in February 2025 from Dyreparken Zoo in Norway, where he was born

Yorkshire Wildlife Park was evacuated following the attack and remained closed on Sunday. The park's Land Of The Tigers area, a two-acre reserve for endangered Siberian tigers, opened in 2011.

Visitors were evacuated by staff before the park was closed for the remainder of the day
