A man was hospitalized on Friday after allegedly setting fire to an apartment unit and jumping from a first-floor window during an early morning siege in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Emergency services responded to Malabar Road in South Coogee around 3:30 a.m. following reports of a welfare concern for a potentially armed man barricaded inside a unit.
Police located the 42-year-old man inside the unit, where he was reportedly threatening to set the property ablaze. As officers approached to communicate with him, the man allegedly ignited the unit.
Dramatic footage captured the man smashing through a front window as thick smoke poured from the unit. Shouts were heard from officers, and one drew a Taser as the man leaped from the window. Flames were also observed emerging from a second room within the unit.
Officers quickly apprehended the man, who was then assessed by paramedics. He was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and further evaluation. Fire and Rescue NSW personnel extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and inquiries are ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
