George Gordon, 65, is on trial for the murder of his friend Delia McInerney, whose body he allegedly hid in a freezer for nearly three years. The prosecution claims Gordon killed McInerney in April 2023, days before she was due to move to Portugal, and then used her identity to access her bank accounts and obtain loans.

McInerney's dismembered body was discovered in January of this year at Gordon's flat in St Helens, along with her five pet guinea pigs, who the jury was told died by drowning. Gordon has admitted to killing McInerney but claims it was in self-defense, a plea that contrasts with his earlier statement to police that he acted to "end her suffering" after she had taken an overdose.

According to the prosecution, Gordon began purchasing items such as a sledgehammer and a handsaw around the time of McInerney's death. Following her death, over £2,000 was transferred from her accounts to Gordon's. He then reportedly ordered a chest freezer online.

For more than 18 months, Gordon allegedly impersonated McInerney in communications with her friends and neighbors, fabricating stories about her whereabouts. The deception began to unravel in December 2025 when a request was made to transfer McInerney's pension payments to a different account under the name of Chris Cavendish-Gordon, who claimed to be a social worker.

Police arrested Gordon at his flat on January 8. As officers escorted him out, he reportedly said, "She's in there" and "She's in the freezer." Gordon denies murder and causing unnecessary suffering to animals. The trial at Liverpool Crown Court is expected to last six weeks.
