Man Found Dead in Queensland Floods After Days of Heavy Rain

A man was found dead in floodwaters on Queensland's Fraser Coast on Monday, authorities reported. Emergency services responded to a creek at Boompa shortly after 11 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene in Smothering Creek on Boompa Road. Queensland Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Elsewhere in Queensland, six campers were rescued from floodwaters at a public campground in Leyburn, located in the Southern Downs region. Queensland Fire and Rescue Swiftwater crews conducted the rescue on Monday morning, successfully extracting three men and two women without any reported physical injuries.

The rescues occurred after a four-day period of intense rainfall across Queensland, which caused widespread flooding of rivers and roads throughout the state's south and east. Authorities issued warnings for continued rain and flooding.

Flash flooding impacted Laidley Creek and Glenore Grove in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, leading to road closures. Rainfall totals varied across the state, with Blackdown Tableland recording 439.4mm by early Monday. Lower Springbrook received 325.2mm, Nambour recorded 314.2mm, and Brooweena measured 299.6mm.

A meteorologist described the weather system as unusual, characterized by widespread rain bands, extensive cloud cover, cooler temperatures, and accompanying storms, all driven by atmospheric conditions at higher altitudes. Thunderstorms had briefly stretched from southern Queensland to Bass Strait on Sunday evening before moving east.

Flood warnings remain in effect for several river systems, including Warrill Creek and the Bremer River in the Lockyer Valley, the Macintyre and Moonie rivers in the south, and the Mary River near the Sunshine Coast. Western Queensland is also under alert, with warnings issued for the Warrego River at Charleville, the Bulloo River in Quilpie, and the Barcoo River at Blackall.

The Bureau of Meteorology indicated that Queensland's weather was expected to transition back to more typical spring conditions as the week progressed, with hot and humid days potentially giving way to more subdued afternoon showers and storms.
