A 55-year-old man died on Sunday morning after being attacked by a dog at his rural property in Coonabarabran, New South Wales. Emergency services responded to the Timor Road property, where they found the man suffering from severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police euthanized the dog, whose breed is unknown, at the property. Authorities understand the victim owned the animal.
The New South Wales Police will prepare a report for the coroner. Warrumbungle Shire Council, located in the region, stated it was unable to comment on the specifics of the incident due to the ongoing police investigation.
Approximately three months prior to this incident, the council had issued a public warning regarding the dangers posed by poorly contained dogs. Residents were urged to report any aggressive canine behavior, regardless of whether injuries had occurred. Council data indicates that one dog attack is reported per month within the shire.
"Many recent incidents have occurred when dogs have been allowed to roam or have escaped from their owner's property," the council had stated in its advisory. "While you may believe your dog would not attack, situations can change quickly, especially when a dog is unsupervised or under stress."
