A 32-year-old man has died following an assault on a London Underground platform as he was traveling home from Notting Hill Carnival. British Transport Police (BTP) responded to reports of a serious assault at Liverpool Street station's Central Line platform at approximately 10:51 p.m. on Sunday.
The victim was transported to a hospital with critical injuries and later died on Tuesday, police confirmed. Investigators believe the man had attended the west London carnival and was attacked while making his way from the event.
Jeremiah Maximo, 38, of Drydock Square, Barking, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm. He was scheduled to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, but BTP announced they would apply to amend the charge following the victim's death. His court appearance will be rescheduled.
The Notting Hill Carnival, which celebrated its 60th anniversary over the August Bank Holiday weekend, is estimated to have been attended by one to two million people.
Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn of BTP stated, "First and foremost, our thoughts are firmly with the loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues."
Blackburn added, "We continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation. Any piece of information could be vital to us."
