A man arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a house fire that claimed the lives of a child and her aunt has appeared in court charged with grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation. The charges relate to a separate alleged incident.
Jaden Wright, 23, of Middlesbrough, appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Saturday. Prosecutors stated the alleged attack occurred on August 25, with the complainant reportedly living in a tent at the time. The complainant sustained injuries including a fractured eye socket and was taken to hospital.
Wright was initially arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of murder following a house fire in the Grangetown area of Teesside on Wednesday. The fire resulted in the deaths of Natalie McDonald, 34, and her 7-year-old niece, Valentina Foster.
Authorities have confirmed that four other individuals sustained injuries in the house fire. A 48-year-old woman remains in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a critical but stable condition. A 27-year-old man is receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital. Two teenage girls suffered non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged.
Cleveland Police had previously arrested two men, aged 23 and 31, on suspicion of murder in relation to the fire. The house remains unstable, and structural work is planned to ensure the site's safety and allow for further investigation.
During the 30-minute hearing on Saturday, Wright, dressed in a grey T-shirt, confirmed his name and personal details. No pleas were entered to the charges. Magistrates ordered Wright to be remanded into police custody. He is scheduled to appear again at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, September 2.
