A man has been charged with arson after allegedly starting ten fires in Hackney, east London, during dry conditions. Isaac Shozi, 50, of Hackney, was arrested shortly after 5 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, following multiple reports of fires in London Fields, near Lansdowne Drive.
Shozi was charged with arson, setting fires, and possession of a Class A drug. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Monday, August 17.
The London Fire Brigade extinguished the ten fires, which were all located within London Fields. No injuries were reported. Authorities have emphasized the dangers of starting fires, especially following recent hot weather that increased the risk of wildfires.
"No one can be in any doubt about the dangers of starting fires, particularly following the recent hot weather and heightened risk of wildfires," said Detective Superintendent Liz Cumber of the Metropolitan Police. "Even small fires can spread quickly and put people, buildings and open spaces at risk."
Police stated that they take all such reports seriously and work with partners like the London Fire Brigade to investigate incidents and take appropriate action against those who endanger the public. The public is urged to call 999 immediately if they witness a fire or behavior that could pose a risk of fire starting, as prompt reporting can help emergency services respond quickly and prevent serious harm.
