ATHENS, Greece -- A man accused of killing Scottish aid worker Elisabeth Jane Ross and hiding her body in a suitcase has been charged with murder and robbery, police said Wednesday.
The body of Ross, 38, was discovered inside a suitcase at an abandoned building on July 18, a few days after her arrival in Athens to visit friends.
Authorities identified the suspect using street camera footage that showed a man wheeling a large, dark-colored suitcase near the site where the body was found. The suspect was arrested on Sunday.
The United Kingdom National Crime Agency and Police Scotland, along with law enforcement from the United States, assisted in the investigation.
The suspect, who is a migrant and has not been publicly named in accordance with Greek law, was granted 24 hours to prepare his defense and is expected to appear in court again on Thursday, according to court officials. Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the suspect was born in Afghanistan and was pursuing a boxing career in Athens, though authorities have not publicly confirmed these details.
